Military Installation Contamination

The military has documented that there are several bases on the NPL (National Priorities List) that have water contamination issues, for example: Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, Jacksonville NAS in Florida and Camp Lejeune Military Reservation in North Carolina.

The different types of contaminates that have been found include solvents, metals (such as lead,) cadmium, pesticide residue and even military substances such as nerve agents and unexploded ordnance. Petrochemical storage tanks could be old and rusted so they can be leaking as well.

The most discussed base is Camp Lejeune. The dumping began as early as the 1950’s. This is before the EPA was enforcing standards on bases. Not only military personnel but civilians in the surrounding areas complained about the taste and odor of the water. Then the serious issues began when people were getting violently ill.  Local health officials were treating individuals with various maladies from gastrointestinal problems to blood disorders. One of the causes was Groundwater Leaching. This is an extreme broad based environmental concern where the water from the rain seeps into the ground and can dissolve chemicals, carrying them into the ground water supply. Adding to these issues was that these areas have special environmental sensitivity, such as wetlands, natural habitat for endangered and other wildlife species. As the ground or well water is pumped for consumption, we need to make sure that it gets filtered correctly to control, diminish and eliminate the different contaminates. The DOD has spent approximately $42 billion in environmental restoration over the past 10 years. They are dedicated to the cleanup of nearly 20,000 active sites that have been identified by the National Priorities List that is regulated under the Federal Superfund Law. Keeping our Soldiers Safe

For over 30 years, Filter Pure Systems has been keeping our soldiers safe by keeping their drinking water SAFE, especially our boys on the seas. Did you know that a survey was done to determine the risk of contaminated drinking water aboard eleven different US Naval ships? The findings showed that every ship had a moderate risk of chemical contamination in production, storage and distribution systems. This was due to volatile organic compounds, total petroleum hydrocarbons, disinfection by-products and lead.

Seawater/Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis, also known as hyper filtration, is the preferred method of seawater and brackish water purification. As the equipment needed to perform reverse osmosis is cost-effective, and the process requires little input energy compared to other methods of purification, reverse osmosis has become the worldwide leader among desalinization methods. Developed at UCLA, and used commercially since the 1970’s, seawater reverse osmosis has served marine professionals for nearly 40 years. Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) is used in a wide range of commercial applications. Marine professionals such as commercial fisherman and offshore rig workers rely on SWRO to provide freshwater for routine daily tasks such as bathing, cleaning and of course, drinking. In larger applications, such as cruise ships, SWRO is sometimes also used. In such applications, it is necessary not only to desalinize water, but to provide quality freshwater. Cruise liner restaurant professionals count on SWRO for water used for cooking, as well as making coffee, soda and other beverages. Here, consistency is key. By way of its simple yet effective design, reverse osmosis is able to consistently satisfy the needs of those who count on it. The process itself is relatively simple and straightforward. In order to purify a liquid, the “solvent” (in this case, water) is put under pressure in excess of 250 psi for brackish water and 1000 psi for seawater, forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane. This application-specific membrane allows water molecules to pass through, but catches “solutes,” yielding purified water. When employed, reverse osmosis is capable of not only of de-salting water, but also removing other impurities such as bacteria, ions and particulates.
