7.5 million Floridians were exposed to unsafe drinking water in 2015!

According to a newly published, ( May 2017) Natural Resources Defense Council study,  more Floridians are exposed to unsafe drinking water than just about anywhere in the country. This  new study of nationwide violations, notes that the state ranked second in the number of people impacted by violations under the Safe Drinking Water Act based on the most recent data available from 2015. Nationally, 77 million people were exposed to unsafe water, with violations including high levels or toxic arsenic, lead and other chemicals, as well as failure to test or report contamination. To compile the data, the nonprofit looked at the most recent, comprehensive data and ranked states based on the number of people exposed to unsafe water. That could skew findings to heavily populated states, but even as a percentage, Florida ranked in the top 10. Altogether, 7.5 million Floridians received water from utilities that violated standards. Among the state’s top violations was failing to provide its citizens with a required annual water quality report. Other major problems violated rules on cancer-causing disinfectants, high levels of coliform from human waste, and lead and copper that exceeded safe limits. Nationwide, the study found that small and rural communities racked up the highest number of violations and that for nine out of 10 violations, no formal action was taken to correct problems. The study turned up 80,000 violations in 2015 in 18,000 water treatment systems across the country. Of these, 12,000 violations created potential health hazards. In Florida, more than 250 violations were tied to health hazards. The NRDC also reported that the EPA has not added any new drinking water standards since the law was amended in 1996 to require regular five-year updates on potential new contaminants to be monitored, including algae-related toxins that have fouled water around Florida. Worried about your water? We recommend that you start with a water analysis so you can focus treatment specifically on the problems with your water. Know what your treating already? Filter Pure recommends the Pentair/Everpure family of water filters for premium quality drinking water. Their unique filter blend uses activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor and offensive contaminants down to ½ micron in size even taking out water borne cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. Is the the 2017 Commercial Ice Machine season starting early?

Memorial Day usually marks the beginning of the Commercial Ice Season and the majority of ice for consumption and refrigeration is purchased in the summer but with temperatures already climbing toward 100 this weekend, I think it might be arriving early this year! The majority of ice for consumption and refrigeration is purchased in the summer, nearly 80 percent between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to the International Packaged Ice Association. According to AAA / IHS forecast more than 38 million travelers hit the road during the 2016 Memorial Day holiday period, an increase of 1.9 percent over 2015. The 38 million travelers was the most since 2005 and the second-highest total on record. The total was a 10.7 percent above the post-recession average and nine percent above the average since 2000. The average price of gasoline in May of 2016 was $2.30 per gallon and currently the average price as of this writing is $2.39 per gallon an increase of only 4 % over last year but expectations are for prices to rise into the holiday. Even with this expected increase, expectations are for another record year and with record temperatures and record demand from thirsty tourists expected in Florida this year, you can expect commercial ice machine/s to be working overtime and Everpure Ice Machine water filters are ready to help. Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Filter Pure Systems!

Today March 17th, 2017,  approximately 56.1% of Americans plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day according to Wallet Hub. What originally began as a religious holiday has grown to be a day of celebrating Irish culture, dancing, parades, a lot of green and the luck of the Irish. While many of us will hit the pubs and bars to enjoy the very best in green beverages, restaurants are making sure that they are ready for the big day too. Last year over 126 million people in the U.S. celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and average spending was $37 per person. That would make the total spent last year more than $4.6 billion dollars. That’s BILLION with a B and this year the expectation is for $5.3 billion and $38 per person.

Thankfully at Filter Pure Systems we have you covered to make sure your kitchen equipment is ready for the big day and the celebration to continue into this weekend. One of our most popular items is the Everpure High-flow CSR Quad MC2 System (EV9437-11), with low flow alarm.

This NSF 42 and NSF 53 system with bacteriostatic system , includes the 20” pre-filter, EV9534-12 that captures large dirt particles and the very famous MC2, EV9612-56,( “Note lucky Irish Green Color on the cartridge and MC actually means McDonald’s Cold, it was designed with the McDonald’s Corporation to make a coke dispensed into a cup taste like one right out of the can). Nothing has been left to chance with the MC2, EV9612-56 in providing crystal clear “Filtered Pure” water using Everpure pre-coat filtration technology that removes asbestos fibers and cysts such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Entamoeba.  This system provides two sources of treated water with the addition of the SR-X Scale inhibitor to help keep scale from building up in the ice machines and coffee brewers.  It has an overall capacity of 36,000 gallons. Many restaurants favor this system because it not only helps protect  kitchen equipment but it can take care of multiple appliances at a time while also making sure that customers are getting the best drinks possible. A customer can tell right away by simply having a glass of water if your water is being treated and if you care about the quality of the beverages and food that you are serving in your facility. Make sure to make your first impression count.  If you have any questions about this system or need assistance in your water treatment solutions please e mail us at info@filterpure.com or call us at 1-800-942-7873 and a customer representative will happily assist you.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us at Filter Pure Systems. Make sure to wear green on the 17th and contact us so we can help save you some green on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day!

The Depressing Reason Bottled Water Is About to Outsell Soda for the First Time.

In a recent Forbes article; http://fortune.com/2016/08/02/bottled-water-outsell-soda/

“It’s not just because consumers are getting more health conscious. Americans are leaving carbonated beverages behind in favor of bottled water. But their motivations go beyond a general trend away from sugary drinks. Bottled water sales are set to surpass sales of soda for the first time in the U.S this year, according to Euromonitor data cited by Bloomberg. And beverage industry giants Coca Cola, PesiCo and Dr. Pepper Snapple all say that, while convenience and health reasons are a large force driving the trend, America’s dilapidated water infrastructure is also a significant contributor. The recent crisis in Flint, Michigan that left children and parents without clean drinking water due to dangerous levels of lead from old pipes highlighted the significant lapses in basic U.S. infrastructure. “Concerns in places like Flint do bring bottled water to people’s attention as a safe and sealed source of drinking water,” Jane Lazgin, a spokeswoman for bottled water market leader Nestle Waters North America, told Bloomberg. “People feeling unsafe about their drinking water clearly leads them to drink it out of a bottle,” added Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Ali Dibadj.”

Worried about the water coming out of your tap but also worried about the damage that all of those billions of water bottles are doing to our environment? It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great!
So, how does one cut out all the plastic bottles from their life, get great tasting water straight from their tap and save money?

By purchasing a high performance drinking water system, that goes under your your kitchen sink. This system uses the same water purification process as Dasani and Nestle and it is called reverse osmosis. This process is used in water purification, manufacturing plants, and chemical laboratories.

One great unit that we recommend is the the PURA QCRO4V. This 4 stage quick change reverse osmosis system can be customized to adapt to changing water conditions. The quick change filters feature the innovative PURA twist and lock design, making filter changes and service fast and easy.

  • Choice of a 50 gpd or 75 gpd membrane
  • Standard Lead Free Air Gap Faucet
  • Color coded tubing for easier installation
  • Quick connect fittings and a self piercing feed valve
  • Interchangeable filters allows the system to be customized to your local water conditions
  • Produces high quality water for better tasting coffee, tea, juices, soups, sauces and pasta and clearer ice cubes
  • System includes a sediment pre-filter, carbon block pre-filter, RO membrane and carbon block postfilter

The first stage of filtration is the sediment filter, which reduces suspended particles such as dirt, dust, and rust. The second stage of filtration is the carbon filter. This filter reduces volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), chlorine, and other compounds that might impact the taste or odor of the tap water. Chlorine should be removed from the water before the water enters the membrane. This will help preserve the life of the membrane. The center and third stage of a reverse osmosis system is the semi-permeable (RO) membrane. It is responsible for rejecting up to 98% of the total dissolved solids in the water.

So you can save the planet, save money and drink healthier water! For more information about this system call 800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com.

Reduce your utility and maintenance costs by improving your water quality!

Regular preventative maintenance is necessary to keep your facility running efficiently and performing to its maximum capability. However, you may have also experienced some unnecessary visits, visits that could have been avoided by controlling one of the most common commodity items: water. Water not only has an effect on utility bills, but it can also be the source of unnecessary maintenance. How often is a service company performing ice machine cleanings? Or descaling a piece of espresso or steam equipment? Controlling your water quality can help to optimize the number of service calls. Equipment that heats or chills water can be the largest source of service calls, and this is often due to varying water quality. Ice machines, especially those that are high-volume, are particularly prone to scale buildup and other water related problems. Steam and combi ovens are also very prone to equipment failure and maintenance from water quality issues. While there have been great advancements in cooking technology over recent years, some of these technologies, like boiler-less combi ovens, make good water quality even more vital. Ovens that use steam are especially susceptible, as any contaminant in water is left behind when the oven turns water to steam. While a service company is vital to maintaining operation, you may also want to ask about how controlling influent water quality may help reduce the number of reactive service calls in your operation. You may even be able to reduce the number of preventative maintenance checks on their current schedule. Controlling influent water quality can be as simple as installing a water treatment solution. There are a number of ways to control water quality, including traditional filtration, softening and reverse osmosis.

• Filtration – Although traditional filtration will not remove hardness and TDS by itself, many filtration companies add phosphate to prevent the precipitation of scale on heating and cooling elements.

• Softening – Softening handles hardness by replacing the calcium in water with sodium. By replacing calcium with sodium, scale, a combination of sodium and carbonate, is prevented from forming

• Reverse Osmosis (RO) – RO removes hardness from water using membrane technology. Dissolved minerals are removed from the water and sent to drain, leaving nearly pure H20.

To learn more about the benefits of improving water quality in your facility please call us at 800-942-7873 or send us an email with your questions toinfo@filterpure.com.
