What about your water and water filtration system after Hurricane Michael?

Provided the water in your area does not fall under a “Do not use”, boil water alert, your filter system and filters unless damaged by the storm should be fine. If your area does fall under a boil water alert you should change all filters and membranes installing new, unused filters or membrane cartridges after you have completely sanitized your system. Boil water alerts are often issued by water municipalities when damage occurs to water lines.  These alerts can also be issued if there is a loss in water pressure, allowing bacteria to backwash into the water pipes. Minerals and viruses like E.coli, cryptosporidium, and giardia, are all things that may get into water when a pipe breaks or during a natural disaster, like flooding. Below is Everpure’s Technical Service Bulletin regarding water quality emergencies and the procedures to place your system back into operation after a boil water alert.

Everpure Technical Service Bulletin
File No: 011414
Subject: Responding to Water Quality Emergencies

RESPONDING TO WATER QUALITY EMERGENCIES
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes cause contamination of municipal water systems over a large area. Industrial and other chemical leaks can also cause contamination of water supplies. If a water quality emergency occurs in your location, follow your local municipality’s instructions for addressing the emergency. If a boil order is issued, follow that boil order advisory until you have been notified by local authorities that your water is potable and safe to use.
Following is our recommended procedure for cleaning and start-up of Pentair water treatment systems using Pentair filters and RO membranes for commercial foodservice applications.

PENTAIR® OBEYING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES:
Obey them, period!
Contamination due to breaks in the mains, general flooding, or damage to the municipal waterworks itself should not be confused with situations in which contamination by protozoan cysts (e.g. Cryptosporidium, Giardia) is discovered in a water supply. Everpure submicron filters and RO membranes are NSF-Certified for removing such cysts, but not for killing or removing dangerous bacteria and viruses, which must be assumed to be present during the aftermath of a disaster, chemical spill or other water emergency.
When a Boil Water Advisory is announced and it is clear that there has been gross contamination, operators should stop using their filtration or RO system and boil their water as advised by their local authorities, until:
1. The “all clear” is given by local water authorities
2. Plumbing systems in your facility have been disinfected
3. Your Pentair system has been cleaned and any old or contaminated filter or RO cartridges have been replaced with new ones

CLEANUP OF PENTAIR SYSTEMS:
When safe water is available again, all water-using equipment should be sanitized with an approved disinfectant such as diluted chlorine bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite). The recommended dosage is 100-200 mg/L chlorine, which is easy to make. Fresh bleach has about 50 mg of chlorine in each mL, or about 500 mg in a capful. Four capfuls or an ounce in a 2-1/2 gal. bucket of water makes about 200 mg/L. Add a few drops of cleaning concentrate (e.g. dish detergent) to this solution and use it to clean external surfaces. Unexposed, interior plumbing surfaces can be sanitized in place using a Pentair Everpure JT Sanitizing/Flushing Cartridge. (Contact your local distributor or sales agent to acquire the JT can). This is an empty housing which can be filled with any cleaning or sanitizing solution and then be inserted into Everpure-branded filter heads. When the flow of water resumes, the disinfectant will be fed into the lines. When a strong chlorine smell is evident at the closest outlet, the flow should be stopped and the sanitizing solution left to soak for at least 30 minutes. When sanitization is complete, remove the flushing cartridge and install new, unused filters or membrane cartridges. Rinse the equipment by flushing water through the system as directed in your system’s Installation and Operation manual. Return your filtration or RO system to service.

POST-EMERGENCY SYSTEM OPERATION:
Follow the replacement cartridge change-out schedule per your system’s specifications. We suggest that you continue to monitor and follow your local water authority’s post-emergency recommendations. Please note that water problems caused by natural disasters often include high turbidity, even muddy, conditions. As a result, filter cartridges may clog faster and need replacing sooner than usual.

Cocoa Beach groundwater contains cancer-linked chemicals, test results show.

Groundwater samples show levels six times higher than Satellite Beach

Results from tests conducted on groundwater in Cocoa Beach revealed the presence of chemicals some have linked to cancer.

Florida Today reports some of the results in Cocoa Beach could be as much as six times higher than similar tests in Satellite Beach.

One day after the city of Satellite Beach announced it found cancer-causing chemicals in three test wells, Cocoa Beach samples showed the same compounds in its groundwater at levels as much as six times higher than in neighboring Satellite Beach. The high concentrations were discovered in water used to irrigate Cocoa Beach’s city golf course.

While Cocoa Beach’s drinking water comes from sources on the mainland, the latest discovery of the toxic chemicals increases concerns that the contamination of the barrier island’s water table could be more widespread than originally feared with bigger health implications. Besides the groundwater at the golf course, the highest level of the compounds were discovered at a site where sewage from Patrick Air Force Base flows into Cocoa Beach’s sewer system. The chemicals, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA),  were widely used in fire extinguishing foams. The chemicals were also used in pesticides, Teflon coatings and a litany of consumer and industrial products. Their use has been phased out but the compounds remain in the environment for decades and are not regulated.

Researchers are finding that even at low levels of exposure, the compounds are implicated in some types of cancer, thyroid defects, immune suppression and pregnancy complications.

Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach and Brevard County representatives met with Patrick Air Force Base officials on Thursday to compare notes on the possible source of the contamination. The most likely suspect are the foams that were used for decades at the base in training drills and putting out fires.

Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach tested for the two compounds after residents raised concerns earlier this year about a spate of local cancer cases in recent years among otherwise young healthy women.

On August 2nd, Cocoa Beach announced combined levels of the two compounds were as follows:

  • 248.3 parts per trillion in a 10-foot-deep well at the golf course’s northern end;
  • 129.6 parts per trillion at a 10-foot-deep well well on the golf course near Banana River;
  • 430.1 parts per trillion where Patrick Air Force Base sewage flows into Cocoa Beach’s sewer system;
  • 284.4 parts per trillion at the Cocoa Beach’s sewer plant’s discharge, right before treated sewage is pumped to reclaimed water storage tanks;
  • 177.2 parts per trillion at the point where all the sewage, including Patrick’s, flows into Cocoa Beach’s sewer plant.

According to the city, more sites are being added for a second round of testing within the next 10 days. The results will be posted when received and analyzed, Cocoa Beach officials said. That will include sewage flowing from spots throughout the city, at various lift stations and from Port Canaveral, city officials said.

By comparison, Satellite Beach’s recent groundwater tests at three wells that ranged from 10 to 20 feet deep were as follows:

  • 41.5 parts per trillion in a well right outside City Hall;
  • 22.85  parts per trillion in a well at Jackson Avenue near Satellite High School and;
  • 30.13 parts per trillion in well at South Patrick Community Park, near Sea Park Elementary School.

The decision to test the water came after Julie Greenwalt, a Jacksonville oncologist and cancer survivor who graduated from Satellite High School, questioned whether local exposures could have contributed to her illness and those of dozens of others in the area in recent years. She pointed to recent federal testing that showed high concentrations of chemicals from firefighting foams in groundwater at Patrick Air Force Base. “We’re going to maintain open communication, because we’re all striving for the same goal — remaining open, honest and transparent,” said Alex Preisser, a spokesman at Patrick. The compounds were among 28 chemicals that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency required water systems to test for between 2013 and 2015. Neither Melbourne nor Cocoa’s water systems found any of the chemicals during that round of testing, according to EPA data.

According to the EPA the most common groundwater treatment is extraction and filtration through granular activated
carbon. However, because PFOA and PFOS have moderate adsorbability, the design specifics are very important in  acceptable treatment (EPA 2016b, 2016c). Other potential adsorbents include: ion exchange resins, organo-clays, clay
minerals and carbon nanotubes (EPA 2016b, 2016c; Espana and others 2015). Evaluation of these sorbents needs to consider regeneration, as the cost and effort required may be substantial (EPA 2016b, 2016c).

If you are dealing with these contaminants you may want to consider the top selling H-300 drinking water system.

Features of the Everpure H-300 Drinking Water System include:

  • Part Number: EV927076

Staying hydrated and avoiding heat stroke as the heat index approaches 120 degrees!

The US Southwest is sizzling as temperatures approach 120 degrees today,( July 24, 2018). Temperatures approached 120 degrees in parts of the U.S. Southwest on Monday, ( July 23, 2018), and forecasters said this week could bring the region’s hottest weather of the year. Phoenix reached a sweltering 115 degrees (46 Celsius), which broke the previous daily record, according to the National Weather Service. A heat advisory was in effect for west Texas and southeast New Mexico into Monday evening, with high temperatures well into the triple digits, the service said. Afternoon school bus service was canceled Monday in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where the mercury climbed to 105 degrees (41 Celsius). Forecasters issued excessive heat warnings to much of Arizona, including parts of Grand Canyon National Park, and extended into areas of Southern California and Nevada.The operator of California’s electrical grid to call for voluntary conservation of power Tuesday and Wednesday due to high temperatures in much of the West. Parts of Utah were also issued an excessive heat warning with temperatures this week expected to approach 109 degrees (43 Celsius). The weather service said the warning for Utah’s Dixie and Lake Powell regions will be in effect Tuesday through Thursday. The National Weather Service uses a complicated formula that varies from region to region to declare an excessive heat warning, including close to record-breaking temperatures. Forecasters say southern Arizona will swelter through temperatures from 112 to 119 degrees through Wednesday. Some of the highest temperatures over the next few days were expected in Phoenix, and officials are cautioning people to stay hydrated and take advantage of cooler indoor buildings. Maricopa County public health officials say 155 people died in the Phoenix area last year from heat-caused illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.   Heat-related illnesses occur when your body can’t keep itself cool. As the temperature rises, your body dissolves sweat to stay cool. On hot, humid days, the increased moisture in the air slows down this process. When your body can’t cool, your temperature rises and you can become ill. Hot weather and exercise are the main causes of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. In hot settings, you need to be mindful of the temperature outside. The heat index is not the same as the temperature. It measures the air temperature plus the effects of humidity. A heat index of 90°F or higher is dangerous. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures increases your risk of heat-related illnesses.

If a person is displaying known heat illness symptoms, take their temperature. A reading of 104°F or more means they probably have heatstroke. You should call 911 and get medical care right away. There are many things you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses. Babies, children, and elderly people are more sensitive to heat and require extra attention. You also are at greater risk if you are ill or obese, or have heart disease. People who work outside or in a hot setting also are at risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Don’t go outside when the temperature and heat index are high. If possible, stay indoors in air-conditioned areas. If you must go outside, take the following precautions.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
  • Avoid or limit drinks that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee, and soda) or alcohol.
  • Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat and outdoor activities.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration and lack of salt contribute to heat-related illnesses. Some sports drinks can help replenish the salt in your body lost through sweating. Drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If your urine is clear, you are probably drinking enough fluids. Dark-colored urine is a sign that you’re dehydrated.

Looking to create your very own hydration station at home! You may want to consider an Industry top seller like the H-300 drinking water system. The same commercial quality that makes Pentair® Everpure the overwhelming choice for water filtration in restaurants is also available for your home. Pentair Everpure exclusive precoat filtration technology combines Micro-Pure® and a unique pleated filter membrane. Rave Reviews For the Everpure H-300 Water Filter Replacement Cartridge (EV9270-72 or EV9270-71)!

5.0 out of 5 stars                                                                                                                                                                    Convenient and effective filter

I’ve been using the EverPure H-300 filter for three years now, and I am on my fourth filter. I have it mounted under my kitchen sink, where it dispenses from its own faucet. It’s a large filter, so I had to make sure the cabinet under the sink was set up properly to accommodate it. Once the system was all set up, it was great. The filter itself is easy to change. I just twist the old one off and twist the new one on. It takes me about five minutes, and that’s only because I have to get awkwardly inside my under-sink cabinet.

To give you an idea of how long the filter lasts, my family of five uses the filtered water for drinking and cooking, but not for things like washing dishes. Given that amount of usage, each filter has lasted 10-11 months. It comes with a timer to indicate when the filter should be replaced, but I’ve been ignoring that. I wait until the water pressure starts to get lower, and then I replace it.

As far as what it filters out, this is a good choice compared to Brita or other pitcher type filters. As others have mentioned, it does reduce the amount of lead in the water. If you really want to get everything out of your water, you need to get something like a reverse osmosis system.

5.0 out of 5 Stars                                                                                                                                                                               Much better than the bargain filter I tried                                                                                                                                      By OldViking  December 3, 2016

I have used this model filter for about 10 years. I tried a generic & smaller filter for my last replacement which was about half the price (and size) as the Everpure. The water from the generic filter did not taste as good as the Everpure and it did not deliver the same volume of drinking water as the Everpure. Now that I have switched back, I am much more satisfied with the taste of my drinking water and brewed coffee as well. A good value for the cost.

Drugs in our drinking water? The case for NSF 401 and the Everpure 300NXT!

In a recent article from CBS News it has been note that Mussels off the coast of Seattle are now testing positive for opioids. More and more medications are making their way through us and down the drain back into the water cycle. The H-300- NXT is the first of its kind to be certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI Standard 401, to reduce pharmaceuticals that may be found in your water. These contaminants include: some pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, herbicides, pesticides and chemicals used in manufacturing like bisphenol A (BPA). The Pentair Everpure exclusive precoat filtration technology combines Micro-Pure* and a unique pleated filter membrane that is 30% larger than the H-300 filter. Comparable to our top selling H-300, with added benefits to help give your family peace of mind.
