Olive Garden Re-Opens for Dine In Patrons, in Georgia and Tennessee!

Olive Garden’s parent company, opened most of its dining rooms, about 100 in that state, for service on Monday. The company also opened some of its restaurants in Tennessee for dine-in service. Going out for a meal at the local Olive Garden is different amid COVID-19. All workers will be wearing masks, the dining room layout has been changed in order to promote social distancing and, in keeping with re-opening rules issued by the state, Darden Restaurants will only serve parties of six or fewer. State guidelines also limit the number of guests inside restaurants to no more than 10 people per 500 square feet of dining space. The Company is currently considering re-opening more facilities in Texas Starting Friday under Texas guidelines.

Re-opening your facility? If you are an owner operator and have been shut down for an extended period of time, Pentair Everpure has the following guidance for your water treatment system;

Filtration systems are designed to be operated on a continuous basis with only relatively short periods of down time (overnight and holidays). When a system is shut down for an extended period of time, there is a potential for microbiologic growth. To address concerns with system operation after the shutdown, please follow the below instructions. This is applicable to all Pentair filtration systems (i.e., pre-filters, carbon-based cartridges and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems).

Periodic Flushing In cases where the customer knows that the system will be down for an extended time and is able to get to the system on a periodic basis, follow the below flushing procedure every 3-4 days:

Filtration Systems
Flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
Empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush through all ports.
Shutdown for Less Than or Equal to 7 Days:

Filtration Systems
When you put the system back into operation, flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
When you put the system back into operation, empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 10 minutes through all ports.

Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days:

All Systems (Filtration and RO)
Remove all existing filtration elements that are present in the system (pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges) and dispose. Disinfect the system as instructed in the applicable Installation and Operations Guide for that specific system.
After the disinfection process is complete, replace the filtration elements with all new pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges. Flush the system as instructed in the applicable IO Guide to complete the procedure.

Softeners
Initiate a manual regeneration.
Shutdown for Greater Than 30 Days:
Softeners
Disinfect per the Installation and Operation Guide for that specific unit. Generally speaking, it is adding some bleach to the brine tank before initiating a manual regeneration.

Assumptions
Pentair assumes the following in providing this guidance: Incoming water is potable.

There is no boil-water advisory or boil-water order issued by the applicable public health or governmental authority.

System is being maintained within normal operating temperature and other conditions as set forth in the applicable specification sheet.

If you have concerns or cannot confirm these assumptions for the system, follow the instructions above under the section entitled “Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days”.

Texas Restaurants Re-Open this Friday, May 1st!

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday announced that restaurant dining rooms there will be allowed to reopen Friday at 25% capacity superseding any local orders in his state. The reopening will come the day after the state’s shelter-in-place order, which has been in place since mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus, lapses. In partnership with the Texas Restaurant Association and health officials across the State, restaurant owners and operators have agreed to make a set of commitments to their employees and customers and earn the endorsement of the “Texas Restaurant Promise” during the COVID-19 recovery period. When customers see this endorsement, they can be certain that the restaurant is taking all necessary steps to protect their employees and customers and that they are taking a leadership role in protecting their community. The Texas Restaurant Promise also empowers customers to learn what they can do to help keep everyone safe.

Waffle House Crisis Index for Covid-19 now at lite Green! Re-Opens 330 Restaurant Dining Rooms in Georgia!

The Waffle House Crisis Index is well known down here in the South as an informal leading indicator of just how bad things really are, usually a weather indicator. All of its wonderful restaurants, (author loves their waffles!), stay open every hour of every day. After extreme weather, like floods, tornados and hurricanes, Waffle Houses are quick to reopen, even if they can only serve a limited menu. That makes them a remarkably reliable if informal barometer usually for weather damage but now for Covid-19! The index was invented by Craig Fugate, a former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2004 after a spate of hurricanes battered America’s east coast. “If a Waffle House is closed because there’s a disaster, it’s bad. We call it red. If they’re open but have a limited menu, that’s yellow. Fully functioning restaurants mean the index has gone green!”. Given that they have re-opened to meet Governor Kemp’s guidelines, we would argue a lite green, but green never the less!

Miami Beach Restaurant Re-Opening Plan!

Last Friday, April 24th, Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales sent a memorandum to members of the city’s Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee that outlines what he described as a “Resilient Recovery Plan” for the city, including restaurants.

Restaurant reopenings would proceed in two phases, according to the memo and additional information supplied by the Manager;

Phase one would allow restaurants to open with outdoor seating only at first, and would request that restaurants consider special hours to accommodate vulnerable populations. In addition, restaurants would operate at 50 percent capacity or require a minimum of six feet of space between tables. Employees would be required to work staggered shifts and wear masks, and hours would be reduced and menus limited. Restaurants would be required to implement measures to prevent servers and bussers to cross-contaminate tables. Establishments with liquor licenses could offer table service, but bars would remain closed to patrons.

Under phase two, restaurants would be allowed to relax social-distancing measures and increase capacity.

Until further notice, restaurants would be asked to supply straws for all drinks, reduce outside seating by 20 to 30 percent, increase airflow from the outside, use phone-app technology to take orders and receive payment, and operate on a reservations-only basis in order to stay within capacity limits.

Bars would not be allowed to open until phase two, when they would be allowed to operate with reduced standing-room occupancy and staggered work shifts and masks for employees. Pool tables and other touch devices (jukeboxes, games, and vending machines) would be off-limits. Plexiglas partitions would be required (the plan doesn’t specify where), as would increased airflow from outside and phone-app technology as with restaurants.

Florida Restaurant Opening Guidelines could look like Georgia’s.

Today, April 27, 2020 restaurants in Georgia are being allowed to open for Dine in operations. Governor Kemp released a list of 39 guidelines on Thursday evening for restaurants to meet what he calls “minimum basic operations.” Those guidelines require employees to wear masks or face coverings at all times, screening staff for COVID-19 symptoms and fevers over 100.4, staggering shifts, and spacing out tables and bar seating in the dining room to allow six feet between other seating arrangements. Additional guidelines include;

  • Allowing only ten patrons per 500 square feet in dining room, waiting area, bar area.
  • No self-service drink, utensil, or condiment stations
  • Encouraging the use of disposable menus
  • Discontinuing salad bars and buffets
  • Thoroughly sanitizing tables and any other commonly used items by guests
  • Using rolled silverware and no presetting of tables
  • Limiting parties to no more than six people per table
  • Encouraging reservation-only
  • Posting signs at the entrance stating no one is allowed in the restaurant who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or a fever over 100.4
  • Using contactless pay options when possible
  • Providing hand sanitizer or additional hand-washing stations for staff and patrons
  • Not allowing people to congregate in waiting areas
  • Prioritizing takeout and delivery over dine-in service when possible

Read the full executive order entitled “Providing guidance for reviving a healthy Georgia in response to COVID-19” here.

Govenor Ron Desantis is still reviewing recommendations from the re-opening Florida task force but is expected to outline his re-opening guidelines this week as the Governor’s “safer at home” order expires on this Thursday, April 30th.

Pentair Everpure Water Treatment System Start-Up Guidance after an Extended Shutdown!
