Raw Water! The latest health craze is not healthy at all!

Doesn’t anyone watch the survivor shows anymore, “Dual Survival””Naked and Afraid” etc.. ? The first thing you do in a survival situation is find what? WATER… but wait you can’t just drink it, you’ve then got to purify that water to make sure that you do not ingest any protozoa, bacteria or viruses. So you boil it to kill everything that is living in it that could potentially make you sick. A new health trend in the United States is to avoid drinking tap water in exchange for “raw water”, putting your health at risk in the process. According to the World Health Organisation, drinking contaminated water causes over half a million diarrhoeal deaths every year. There is a reason why we chlorinate our water. At the turn of the century, thousands of people died annually from cholera, dysentery and typhoid fever.  The “raw” water folks will tell you that the goal with “raw” water is to avoid chlorine, chloramine, fluoride and oxidized carcinogen byproducts from public water treatment systems and also get all of the wonderful “Raw” living organisms from natural spring water. Chlorine, chloramine, (chlorine plus amonia) are highly efficient disinfectants and are added to public water supplies to oxidize, kill these disease-causing pathogens that commonly grow in water supply reservoirs, on the walls of water mains and in storage tanks. Raw water enthusiasts will tell you that the water you are drinking from your tap is dead water that offers none of the qualities that “Raw” water offers but of course they want to sell you that Raw water for about $30.00 a gallon.  “Dead water” from your tap isn’t dead, it’s purified water…H2O and it is the elemental properties of water that humans must have to survive. Your body is approximately 60 percent water, your brain is 70 percent water, and your lungs are nearly 90 percent water. Each day, your body must replace 2.4 liters — or about 2.5 quarts of water — through ingested liquid and foods. Water is more important for your body’s survival than food. You can live without water for approximately one week, but you can survive without food for more than a month. Lack of water, or dehydration, reduces the amount of blood in your body, forcing your heart to pump harder in order to deliver oxygen-bearing cells to your muscles. In the early stages of dehydration, you can become dizzy, irritable and experience headaches. As dehydration progresses, you become clumsy and exhausted. Your eyesight fades. In the last stages of dehydration, you may feel nauseous and begin vomiting. Without water, you will enter a coma and die. If your goal really is to avoid everything bad in your water coming from your tap you may want to just purchase a very affordable reverse osmosis system to put under your sink to take everything out of the water including chlorine, chloramine, chlorine byproducts.  Reverse osmosis drinking water systems are the number one recommendation for removing a wide variety of these contaminants including atrazine, chloroform, Lead, Fluoride and other industrial chemicals. Filter Pure Systems recommends and stocks several different brands of reverse osmosis systems including Hydrotech’s latest RO system featuring quick-change cartridges, which can be customized for changing water conditions. These proprietary cartridges also simplify the regular replacement as required – typically on an annual basis. The QCRO delivers bottle water quality without the hassle or cost.

A reverse osmosis system is the the number one thing you can do to easily ward off Cancer!

Cancer experts have identified 20 chemicals that we may be exposed to daily that are suspected of causing cancer in our every day lives. When the President’s Cancer Panel released its report stating that environmental chemicals were a “grossly underestimated” cause of cancers in the U.S., the American Cancer Society (ACS) responded by saying the report put too much weight on environmental causes and not enough emphasis on known cancer risks, such as tobacco smoke and obesity. Hoping to bring a little clarity to the field of chemicals that may trigger cancers, the ACS, three government agencies, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer published a list of 20 chemicals so far not officially linked to cancer but still in widespread use that have the strongest evidence against them that they may cause cancer. After reviewing the existing research, 20 chemicals showed enough evidence of causing cancer in laboratory tests and in animals that there was a strong likelihood that they could also cause cancer in humans. Most of the chemicals on their list are industrial chemicals, for instance, carbon black (a substance used to make synthetic rubber) and welding fumes, but others are much more common and can crop up in everything from our sunscreen to our water supply:

  • Atrazine: a widely used pesticide for corn that’s so hazardous it’s banned in Switzerland, the home country of the company that manufactures it.
  • Chloroform: a water-disinfection by-product that can wind up in your tap water.
  • Diesel engine exhaust.
  • Diethylheyxl ptthalate (DEHP): a chemical used to keep vinyl plastics, like your shower curtain, soft and pliable
  • Formaldehyde: already a known human carcinogen that causes pharynx and nasal cancers, this chemical (used in hundreds of building products) was added to the list because of suspicions that it might cause leukemia.
  • Lead and lead compounds.
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): banned since the 1980s, these industrial flame retardants still linger in our food supply.
  • Styrene: used to make polystyrene foam coffee cups and takeout containers.
  • Perchloroethylene: the commonly used dry-cleaning solvent.
  • Titanium dioxide: used as a colorant in paints but also as an ingredient in sunscreens; the researchers were particularly concerned about nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, which are already suspected of causing brain damage.

Reverse osmosis drinking water systems are the number one recommendation for removing a wide variety of these contaminants including atrazine, chloroform, Lead, Fluoride and other industrial chemicals that the ACS included on its list, such as trichloroethylene (a solvent used in auto body shops and mechanics’ garages) and formaldehyde.

Happy Fathers Day!

Sorry Dads, we are not as popular as Mom and Mothers Day, the most popular holiday of the year to dine out but we will be spending more than $15.5 billion this year on Dad according to the National Retail Federation. According to the Federation and a recent Fortune article, most Americans, 39.9% according to the NRF, plan on purchasing gifts directly from department stores compared to the 33.7% who will order gifts online. A Father’s Day shopper is expected to spend an average of $134.75 on Dad this year, $8.83 more than in 2016. Something very interesting that has been consistent and we can expect more of this year are millennials….sons and daughters plan on spending their money on experiences rather than things this year, including eating out and travel. Additional experiences can include live performances and other social events. Planned spending on a special outing with Dad surpassed gift spending on clothing, gift cards and even electronics. Worried about Dad’s drinking water experience? Not sure that Dad is well hydrated and drinking enough water? We recommend the OW200L drinking water system if you would like to leave minerals in the water or if you would like to take just about everything out of the water, think “Dasani”, check out the PURA QCRO , either one are easy to DIY.  Not sure if either are the right choice?….give us a call at 800-942-7873 or contact us at info@filterpure.com to discuss a total solution for Dad’s house!

Sinkhole dumps 200 Million Gallons of Contaminated Water into Florida Aquifer.

130

A massive sinkhole opened up underneath a storage pond in Florida draining  millions of gallons of acidic water laced with sulfate and sodium from a pool atop a 120-foot gypsum stack at the Mosaic New Wales plant in Mulberry. An unknown amount of gypsum, a fertilizer byproduct phosphoric acid with low levels of radiation, also fell into the sinkhole and  into one of the state’s main underground resources of drinking water.  Not all of it is being caught by pumps. The Floridan aquifer is a major source of drinking water in the state. One of the highest producing aquifers in the world, it underlies all of Florida and extends into southern Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It’s the principal source of groundwater for much of the state, and the cities of Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando, Daytona Beach, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. The aquifer also supplies water to thousands of domestic, industrial and irrigation wells throughout the state. Worried about your drinking water?

When it comes to radiation, reverse osmosis is effective at removing most particles from your water. One great unit that we recommend is the the PURA QCRO4V. This 4 stage quick change reverse osmosis system can be customized to adapt to changing water conditions. The quick change filters feature the innovative PURA twist and lock design, making filter changes and service fast and easy.

New for 2016, High Capacity Chloramine Systems from Everpure. The new 7CLM+ and XCLM+ Filter Systems.

The new high capacity simple solution for chloramine reduction; The Everpure 7CLM+ and XCLM+ Filter Systems from Pentair reduce chloramines and a wide variety of other contaminants, making them excellent filters for fountain beverage, frozen carbonated beverage and drinking water applications. Pairing it with a scale control device such as the Everpure SR-X Scale Inhibition System provides additional protection for coffee, espresso, ice and steam applications.

The Everpure 7CLM+ and XCLM+ Systems offer many benefits for foodservice operators, including:

  • Enhances beverage quality. The system reduces unpleasant tastes and odors, and other offensive containments that can adversely affect the taste of beverages. It also helps fountain beverages retain carbonation.
  • Reduces contaminants. In addition to reducing chloramines, reduces particles as small as 5 micron in size by mechanical means providing additional protection from microorganisms which often survive disinfection by chloramines or chlorine.
  • Extends equipment life. The 7CLM+ and XCLM+ Systems protect drink system seals, pumps, tubing and small orifices from chemical degradation, clogging, corrosion and abrasive wear.
  • Simple. Quick. Clean. Sanitary cartridge replacement is just that – simple, quick and clean. Internal filter parts are never exposed to handling or contamination.

What are chloramines?

Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and ammonia, and are used as a disinfectant to treat drinking water as an alternative to chlorine. Free chlorine lasts for just a few hours, whereas chloramines can last for 2 to 3 days. This means that chloramines can provide more stability for better disinfection over long distances in pipe lines as water moves through distribution systems to the end-users.

For foodservice operations, studies have shown a correlation between chloramines and the corrosion of stainless steel, hoses, gaskets and rubber materials in hot-water applications like combi ovens, steamers and ware washers. Chloramines become corrosive when heated and can negatively impact food and beverage flavor, and cause stainless steel to pit, rust and turn gray. Chloramines also affect copper, copper alloys, other metals and rubber.

Perfect for the Coke Freestyle; Everpure’s CLM line meets all the filtration requirements for the Freestyle machine. It reduces chloramines, chlorine and other offensive contaminants that can adversely effect the taste and odor of the beverage and protects the o-rings that can be effected and swell because of the chloramine in the water.

Contact us today for more information on the new 7CLM+ and XCLM+ systems or replacement cartridges. Question on how we can help?  Contact us atinfo@filterpure.com  or contact us directly at 800-942-7873. You can also check out our CLM line on our website! Click here: EVERPURE’S CLM LINE!

The Depressing Reason Bottled Water Is About to Outsell Soda for the First Time.

In a recent Forbes article; http://fortune.com/2016/08/02/bottled-water-outsell-soda/

“It’s not just because consumers are getting more health conscious. Americans are leaving carbonated beverages behind in favor of bottled water. But their motivations go beyond a general trend away from sugary drinks. Bottled water sales are set to surpass sales of soda for the first time in the U.S this year, according to Euromonitor data cited by Bloomberg. And beverage industry giants Coca Cola, PesiCo and Dr. Pepper Snapple all say that, while convenience and health reasons are a large force driving the trend, America’s dilapidated water infrastructure is also a significant contributor. The recent crisis in Flint, Michigan that left children and parents without clean drinking water due to dangerous levels of lead from old pipes highlighted the significant lapses in basic U.S. infrastructure. “Concerns in places like Flint do bring bottled water to people’s attention as a safe and sealed source of drinking water,” Jane Lazgin, a spokeswoman for bottled water market leader Nestle Waters North America, told Bloomberg. “People feeling unsafe about their drinking water clearly leads them to drink it out of a bottle,” added Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Ali Dibadj.”

Worried about the water coming out of your tap but also worried about the damage that all of those billions of water bottles are doing to our environment? It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great!
So, how does one cut out all the plastic bottles from their life, get great tasting water straight from their tap and save money?

By purchasing a high performance drinking water system, that goes under your your kitchen sink. This system uses the same water purification process as Dasani and Nestle and it is called reverse osmosis. This process is used in water purification, manufacturing plants, and chemical laboratories.

One great unit that we recommend is the the PURA QCRO4V. This 4 stage quick change reverse osmosis system can be customized to adapt to changing water conditions. The quick change filters feature the innovative PURA twist and lock design, making filter changes and service fast and easy.

  • Choice of a 50 gpd or 75 gpd membrane

Is your water ready for Mom!

As the most popular holiday of the year to dine out, Mother’s Day will entice nearly half of Americans to dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery on this Sunday, May 8th. Consumers plan to spend $4.2 billion on jewelry, $4.1 billion on special outings such as dinner or brunch and $2.4 billion on flowers. Total spending is expected to reach $21.4 billion.  According to NRF’s survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics, consumers are expected to spend an average $172.22 per person, on par with last year.  Whether consumers pick mom’s preferred buffet breakfast or her favorite fine-dining dinner, America’s restaurants are stepping up to the plate to help families celebrate the special occasion. And while a majority of consumers make their Mother’s Day meal plans less than a month out, nearly one in five have probably been planning their celebratory meals for more than one month and the first thing that Mom is going to taste is the water! With everything that’s been happening in the news lately regarding drinking water, make sure that your Restaurant’s table water is ready to make a great first impression also. You can be sure that if your water is off color with a bad taste or odor this weekend, it’s not only going to reflect poorly on the person who recommended your restaurant for Mom, but may have the saving grace of being a great conversation starter comparing your water to that of Flint Michigan’s water if they stick around to eat.

Either way it is certainly something that is easy to avoid, as easy as making sure that your water filters have been changed or if you don’t already have one, installing an Everpure water filtration system to take care of all of the beverages and ice that you are serving.  If you already have an Everpure system, it is essential that filters be replaced periodically. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water.

Prefilter, ( First bowl to left, system above)

The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.

Submicron Cartridges ( 3 in the middle system pictured above)

The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.

Scalestick  ( cartridge in last bowl to right pictured in system above)

The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

You should also replace your water filters whenever you notice a decline in performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure, or an unusual taste in the water. You should also, per the CDC, replace your water filter after any boil water advisory alert is lifted in your area. Remember: taste and odor may tip you off to the presence of chlorine in your water, but most contaminants are tasteless and odorless.

For the benefit of our customers, we have set-up automatic electronic reminders that are sent when we see that their filters are due to be replaced, based on order history.  We can even set-up Auto-Ship for customers that know they will need water filters by a certain date, but may not remember to place an order.

If you have a question regarding how often you should replace your filter or not sure about the filter system that you have please email your questions and a picture of the system to info@filterpure.com or call our team at 1-800-942-7873 and have a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Filter Pure Systems!

This year on March 17th all of us will celebrate many beautiful things about the Irish culture. What originally began as a religious holiday has grown to a day of celebrating Irish culture, dancing, parades, a lot of green and the luck of the Irish. While many will hit pubs and bars to enjoy the very best in green beverages, restaurants are making sure that they are ready for the big day tomorrow too. Last year over 126 million people in the U.S. celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and average spending was $37 per person. That would make the total spent last year more than $4.6 billion dollars. That’s BILLION with a B. Thankfully at Filter Pure Systems we have you covered to make sure your kitchen equipment is ready for the big day and the celebration to continue into this weekend.

One of our most popular items is the Everpure High-flow CSR Quad MC2 System (EV9437-10). This NSF 42 and NSF 53 system with bacteriostatic system , includes the 20” pre-filter, EV9534-12 that captures large dirt particles and the very famous MC2, EV9612-56,( “Note lucky Irish Green Color on the cartridge). However, nothing has been left to chance with the MC2, EV9612-56 in providing crystal clear “Filtered Pure” water using Everpure pre-coat filtration technology that removes asbestos fibers and cysts such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Entamoeba.  This system provides two sources of treated water with the addition of the SR-X Scale inhibitor to help keep scale from building up in the ice machines and coffee brewers.  It has an overall capacity of 36,000 gallons. Many restaurants favor this system because it not only helps protect  kitchen equipment but it can take care of multiple appliances at a time while also making sure that customers are getting the best drinks possible. A customer can tell right away by simply having a glass of water if your water is being treated and if you care about the quality of the beverages and food that you are serving in your facility. Make sure to make your first impression count.  If you have any questions about this system or need assistance in your water treatment solutions please e mail us at info@filterpure.com or call us at 1-800-942-7873 and a customer representative will happily assist you.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us at Filter Pure Systems. Make sure to wear green on the 17th and contact us so we can help save you some green on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day!
